Family planning and adolescents 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon (Africa/Lagos) 2022/12/14 10:00:00 UTC - 2022/12/14 11:00:00 UTC
Background/ObjectivesDespite the improvement in family planning in Nigeria from 9.8% to 14% as stated by the DHS report of 2018. Adolescents still have a poor utilization of contraceptives and access to SRH in Nigeria. This fact is a worrying one because of the susceptibility to life-threatening diseases through unprotected sexual activities and unwanted pregnancies. This study intends to review literatures published in the area of adolescents contraceptive utilization with the purpose of identifying factors that are responsible to the hindrance of contraceptive utilization.
Materials and MethodsThis study will employ a review approach, literatures were sourced using the internet through a Google Scholar search, literatures that were reviewed were sieved from several results that fitted the searched keywords. A review matrix was used to classify Methodology, Results, and Conclusions. The matrix allows for a more critical comparative analysis than the conventional method of review.
ResultsThe result of the research shows that researchers favored the quantitative method, and this is because of the availability of quantitative data. Some researchers deployed the use of questionnaire to generate data. The study also showed a lack of literature in the research area because of the little research done.
The review conducted established that negative attitude of parents, health caregivers, stigmatization, lack of awareness and poor knowledge, lack of facilities and poor economic conditions as some of the factors that hinder the use of contraceptives and patronage of RHS.
ConclusionsMore research is needed in the area to provide more insight into the domain to provide more insight. Further training of healthcare providers, Government, and Organizations should organize enlightenment programs on the benefit of adolescent contraceptive use and patronage to RHS facilities. Subsidies should be introduced for adolescents in RHS facilities and units to mitigate the poor economic situation of adolescents.

The influence of counseling and acceptance of family planning services among married adolescents in Kaduna State Nigeria: Do approach and method differentials matter?

Oral PresentationFamily planning and adolescents 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon (Africa/Lagos) 2022/12/14 10:00:00 UTC - 2022/12/14 11:00:00 UTC

Background/Objectives
The Society for Family Health, through the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) Project, has been delivering dual services – counseling and family planning - to married adolescents through outreaches and fixed posts across 11 Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.
This approach has prompted this study on the influence of counseling on the acceptance of family planning services among married adolescent girls in Kaduna State by answering the following questions: (a) does counseling influence the acceptance of family planning methods among married adolescents? (b) how different is the acceptance rate between outreach and fixed post approaches? (c) does the acceptance rate differ across method types?
Materials and Methods
This study leveraged client data generated by the ANRiN Project between July 2021 and February 2022. A dynamic Panel Generalized Methods of Movement (GMM) model was used to answer the first research question while t-test was used to answer the second and third research questions.

Results
Objective 1 - The study found that counseling has a positive influence on the acceptance of modern contraceptives among married adolescent girls in Kaduna State.
Objective 2 – The study found no significant difference in the acceptance rate between outreach and fixed post with t-statistic of -1.43 and a probability value of 0.1543.

Objective 3 – The study found a statistically significant difference between short-term and long-term methods, with a t-statistic of -16.8 and a probability value of 0.0000

Conclusions
The study concludes that counseling can greatly influence FP service uptake. Therefore, future FP interventions should be tailored with a counseling component to boost acceptance. Although outreach or fixed post-counseling does not change the acceptance rate, the difference in methods matters. Lastly, further studies should be conducted to investigate clients' preferences for one method over another.
