Background: The health and economic benefits of modern contraception cannot be overemphasized. It allows for an improved maternal and child health, good standard of living and contributes a lot in ensuring a happy family. However, access to contraception have been limited by several factors such as poor economic power, fewer number of family planning providers, limited FP commodities, and consumables, resulting in high level of unmet needs and these have implications for negative health outcomes in Ondo state. To bridge these gaps, Marie Stopes Nigeria introduced family planning in-reach approach. In-reaches involve the provision of family planning services to needing clients mobilized from a community to a particular facility, usually a primary health centre on designated days. Marie Stopes Nigeria currently supports one hundred out of the six hundred and nine government owned health facilities in the state with family planning using the in reach approach.
Methods: Routine family planning data from January to December 2021 were collected from facilities' family planning register through desk reviews and analysis were done using the Impact2 data analysis tool.
Results: Findings showed that access to family planning services have improved as a total of 85,620 FP clients were served in the state in 2021, averting a total of 29,470 unintended pregnancies, 163 maternal related deaths were averted, 71,548 Daily Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), saving a direct health cost of about ₦537 million.
Conclusion: "In-reach" strategy have shown to be a viable, scalable approach to bridging access barriers to contraception and should be given more attention in national FP programming. Expanding funding sources will results to increased coverage and improved health outcomes in the state.
