Oluyemi, O; Atamewalen, R O; Alfred, T A Background/Objectives Adolescents are key to sustainable development, and several global initiatives call for greater investment in their health. In Nigeria, for instance, health care for this age group tends not to be receiving priority attention, such that many adolescents grope in the dark about matters concerning their health and survival. A highly significant population of adolescents is sexually active (with nearly half [48.6%] of adolescents aged 15–19 years being sexually active) and involved in unprotected sexual activities with multiple partners, exposing them to negative reproductive health consequences. Materials and Methods Supporting Access for Adolescents to Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health Services (Safire) commenced work using the HCD model. The purpose of this is to ensure adolescents aged 10-19 years find friendly, safe, and supportive entry points to discuss their adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) needs in their communities. Community Champions are identified within their community using criteria developed by the project. These champions are trained to create an enabling environment for adolescent girls' access to sexual and reproductive information and services using effective techniques to engage and dialogue with members of the communities in person and online. Results The model has brought about a reduction in stigma on adolescents accessing family planning services and information within their communities. Community Champions awareness creation to different groups has significantly brought about an increased uptake of adolescents aged 15-19years that are sexually active to access various contraceptive needs with a considerable reduction in barriers associated with it. Conclusions Champions are a veritable tool used to facilitate community sensitization activities and dialogues with gatekeepers and other community actors creating awareness and reducing stigma for adolescent girls to get accurate and safe information on their sexual reproductive health services to make an informed decision on their family planning needs.

"In-Reach" Approach: a viable strategy to increasing access to contraception, health and economic well-being of Nigerian women in Ondo State
Oral PresentationFP 2030 Commitment02:50 PM - 03:50 PM (Africa/Lagos) 2022/12/14 13:50:00 UTC - 2022/12/14 14:50:00 UTC
Background: The health and economic benefits of modern contraception cannot be overemphasized. It allows for an improved maternal and child health, good standard of living and contributes a lot in ensuring a happy family. However, access to contraception have been limited by several factors such as poor economic power, fewer number of family planning providers, limited FP commodities, and consumables, resulting in high level of unmet needs and these have implications for negative health outcomes in Ondo state. To bridge these gaps, Marie Stopes Nigeria introduced family planning in-reach approach. In-reaches involve the provision of family planning services to needing clients mobilized from a community to a particular facility, usually a primary health centre on designated days. Marie Stopes Nigeria currently supports one hundred out of the six hundred and nine government owned health facilities in the state with family planning using the in reach approach. Methods: Routine family planning data from January to December 2021 were collected from facilities' family planning register through desk reviews and analysis were done using the Impact2 data analysis tool. Results: Findings showed that access to family planning services have improved as a total of 85,620 FP clients were served in the state in 2021, averting a total of 29,470 unintended pregnancies, 163 maternal related deaths were averted, 71,548 Daily Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), saving a direct health cost of about ₦537 million. Conclusion: "In-reach" strategy have shown to be a viable, scalable approach to bridging access barriers to contraception and should be given more attention in national FP programming. Expanding funding sources will results to increased coverage and improved health outcomes in the state.

Youth voices shape family planning in Nigeria: a youth-led abstract
Poster PresentationFamily planning and adolescents11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon (Africa/Lagos) 2022/12/14 10:00:00 UTC - 2022/12/14 11:00:00 UTC
Background/Objectives The USAID YPE4AH project aims to advance adolescent health in Lagos and Kano States by supporting young people and addressing challenges they face. It provides accurate information and non-judgemental services and referrals around contraceptives, SGBV, substance abuse, and mental health, as well as leadership programming and livelihood skill-building. Adolescents engaged with YPE4AH developed the content for this abstract in a workshop facilitated by project staff. Materials & Methods YPE4AH includes the following key components: Trained youth mentors (Coaches) mobilise adolescents to participate in life skills trainings, sign up for leadership programs, and conduct advocacy visits to community stakeholders.Youth Hubs are safe spaces designed for trainings, physical activities, counselling, and service provision.Hub health providers are trained nurses that provide sexual and reproductive health services. Adolescents visit Hub counselling rooms to access SRH services and are referred for additional services not available at the Hubs, such as LARCs.Results After completing life skills training, adolescents keep returning to the Hubs with their peers. The Lagos State government has handed over the youth centres to the project to manage because the young people have demonstrated their abilities to run their programs.YPE4AH-trained adolescents are seen as dependable and knowledgeable resources within their communities, acting as important resources that can be leveraged for government and programmers to promote project sustainability.More adolescents are equipped with SRH knowledge, aiding informed decisions around FP uptake and continued use.The program builds an empowered adolescent generation: some adolescents who participated in the life skills trainings have progressed to become Coaches or volunteer with local CSOs.Conclusions With adolescents at the core, the project adequately reflects the diversity within this heterogeneous population and has generated an inclusive environment for greater effectiveness. The project addresses the FP needs of adolescents at the grassroot level within the context of everyday life, making it a sustainable venture.
